How can you stay motivated at work?

Some days it’s hard to feel motivated and often we find ourselves staring blankly at our computer screens and twiddling our thumbs – if this is something you can relate to, don’t worry you are not alone. Whether you love or hate your job, learning how to stay motivated to work everyday is a common problem but thankfully there are small changes you can make to ensure you find passion in your job and help to encourage your co-workers. So, how can you stay motivated at work?

The importance of feeling motivated in the workplace

Motivation is an important aspect in all areas of our lives, it allows us to change behaviours, develop competencies, set goals, grow interests and develop talents but one place motivation is crucial, is in the workplace. A motivated workforce is the key to success and feeling engaged in work will mean you are more likely to do a good job and work hard; this is because motivation increases your energy levels, boosts your enthusiasm and ensures better sustained results. Motivation is an important factor that influences both productivity and performance in the workplace and in fact employees who feel engaged in their work are 87% less likely to resign from their company. Feeling motivated in your work will also mean you’ll have less sick days as you’ll feel motivated to go in and give your best; as well as less days off you will also feel a drive to work hard, arrive on time, have a strong focus on your tasks and put effort into giving high quality service. But how can this be done? What can you do to stay motivated at work?

Break up overwhelming tasks

Having large, overwhelming tasks can destroy your motivation as it creates work anxiety and stress; this daunting feeling can cause you to avoid work altogether as it’s hard to know where to even begin. This is why breaking up your larger tasks into smaller objectives can help you feel much more motivated; this method helps to simplify the process and create manageable steps that lead you towards that final result. If you take one thing at a time and break the goal into ideas, you can then digest one at a time until eventually it’s all complete. The sooner that you break up your task, the sooner you can start ticking things off your list – this will result in feeling less overwhelmed and more motivated.

Consider your impact

Motivation can sometimes come from simply reminding yourself how you and your work impact others; you have to remember that you were chosen by that company because you were the perfect person to carry out the role. Having a deep understanding of your job and how your work influences different aspects of your organisation also helps to increase your engagement and passion for what you do. Knowing that you have made an impact on someone – even if it’s just by making them smile – makes pushing through feel an awful lot easier.

Celebrate achievements

Never underestimate how gratifying it can feel to recognise your achievements – big or small. If you are feeling a lack of motivation for work then it’s time to start rewarding yourself for all the hard work that you do; every time you set a new goal, plan a reward ahead of time so you have something to look forward to and work for – remember, this can simply be a chocolate bar at the end of the day or a meal out at the weekend. Rewarding yourself for achieving and accomplishing your goals at work – no matter how big or small – helps you to feel excited about starting and completing the next.

Prioritise your tasks effectively

At the start of every day take the time to look over all your tasks and prioritise them according to what needs to be completed first; by doing this you can get a clear head, a focus for the day and an understanding of exactly where you need to start. Although all tasks must be completed, urgent tasks should take priority and be done first. Being prioritised with your workload leads to less stress, improved time management and greater productivity as well as helping you to stay focused and feel more confident and effective at work.

Constantly feeling motivated at work can be a challenging task and no one will ever feel 100% every single day, however by following the steps above you can feel more engaged, motivated and happy in your workplace. Feeling motivated should be a priority in all aspects of your life as it’s what helps you to feel ready for the day and suppresses the feelings of anxiety, stress and overwhelm. Always ensure that you are in a role and work environment that motivates you to progress in life and do well.
