What are the best studying techniques?

Learning a new subject can be daunting. An endless stream of course material laid out in front of you and not knowing where to start. Finding the best studying technique isn’t just about reading constantly and hoping everything sticks. It’s the combination of effective time management and studying strategies that will help you learn faster. Here at The Square Metre Group, we take a look at the top five studying techniques.

Sleep well

Easier said than done, but getting a good night’s sleep is key to focusing your brain for a day of studying. Getting enough sleep can help concentration, memory, problem-solving and creativity. The Sleep Foundation says that improving sleep can boost cognitive performance, sharper thinking and may reduce the likelihood of age-related cognitive decline. Keep to a schedule

Organise your time by keeping to a set schedule. These can be regular, set hours of the day that you can put aside for study time. This will ensure that you will be able to focus on what you have to learn and to not be easily distracted. By giving yourself the hours you need throughout the course, you won’t find yourself rushing toward a deadline.

Where did I put my pen?

Your study area should be equipped with everything you need in order to learn. Whether it’s a pen and paper or more complex stationery, set out everything prior to studying. The last thing you want is to set aside time to work and then find you can’t remember where you last used your phone charger!

Make notes

Writing down notes as you learn is helpful when trying to remember key points. It is also useful to know what is expected from your tutors in terms of completing the assignments. You don’t have to physically write everything down, but make a recording on your phone to listen back and take in information later.

Test yourself regularly

What you learnt three weeks ago isn’t sticking? Revisit topics by giving yourself regular tests. This will help identify problem areas that you’re not getting to grips with. Get help from fellow students, ask them to help with any problems you have and vice versa. Flash cards are a useful age-old tool that are a perfect way of learning tricky subjects. You’ll be surprised at how writing a simple fact on a card to remind you of its definition can help.
